You were smart to get the vaccines. It's also smart to get the yearly flu vaccines. Here's my last Covid article from last Oct.
Let's all say this again, "Covid kills the elderly".
Being vaccinated doesn't change that.
Statistically, a fully vaccinated 65yo man is as likely to die of C-19 as an unvaccinated 35yo. Being vaccinated improves your odds, it doesn't make you immune. A breakthrough infection can kill you if you are over 65.
What's the risk of that?
About the same as the flu.
Now, I know if you are under 50 you are thinking, "oh that's not bad, we have lived with the flu for a hundred years now". Yeah, that's because the flu only kills 1 in 10,000 of those under 65.
For those over 65, the yearly flu kills 1 in 1,000. About 30–50 thousand every year in the US.
If you are over 65, the vaccines reduce the risk of dying of C-19 from about 1 in 25 to about 1 in 1,000.
This is a huge step forward. This is massive progress. This will save millions of people. But, it doesn't mean you're safe. It means that you're at less risk.
The risk is double for men because,
70/30, the ratio of Male vs Female mortality in all age groups.
Men die twice as much as women from Covid-19
In the public data set, the number of men who died from COVID-19 is 2.4 times that of women (70.3 vs. 29.7%, P = 0.01). While men and women have the same prevalence, men with COVID-19 are more at risk for worse outcomes and death, independent of age.
Those at the greatest risk are men over 65.
That's why you got vaccinated and will get vaccinated every year, just like the flu, if you have to. Because you understand the risks and you want to live.
Don't apologize to anyone for that.
