This was an interesting piece, I don't agree with your overall conclusions. BUT, you raised some really interesting points and got me thinking. I APPRECIATE that in a writer.

I will be subbing on your site as a sign of support. I have enjoyed your articles for YEARS and Medium is taking a BIG CUT from the writers now. I guess they need big numbers to bring in the investors.

I have long considered "maintenance" to be a "growth inhibitor". Both in the biological sense of cells and organisms and in the "meta-biological" sense of societies and cultures.

An organism starts out as no more than a few cells and GROWS. As it grows, the amount of "maintenance" required to support that growth increases. Typically organisms STOP growing when the energy they can consume is roughly equal to the energy cost of maintaining the existing body.

In the past this has also been true of cultures and societies. When, what a society can take in as taxes, roughly equals the cost of maintaining its critical infrastructure. It could not GROW any further without stealing wealth from its neighbors.

At which point it becomes a CANCER right?

Empires are always societies that have "gone cancerous". Because they are always about the extraction of wealth from the "provinces" towards the CENTER.

They have to keep expanding in order to stay afloat and they do that by "looting" the conquered.

America looted the entire fucking world to the point of eco-collapse and environmental catastrophe. Supposedly we brought DEMOCRACY to the world in exchange for that.

There is no more world for us to loot.

What you are seeing is the start of our FALL.

We are AT WAR with China. Right now it's mostly a WAR of shadow actions and feints. It's going to go HOT within the next 2 years. Probably next year after the election.

It's also highly probable that America is going to lose that war. Because you are right.
