This is a facet of an old debate that goes back to the 1930's. As a counterpoint to this read the excellent book ""The Wizard and the Prophet".

The allure of the Prophet position is strong. A return to an imagined Eden. But that scenario always starts with, "first 85% of the population dies".

I have never been happy with that.
