Sigh. Part of me wants to do a snarky quip but this is a serious problem. It's so serious that we are going to have to do something about it. But all of the possible solutions sound really dubious.

This is not a new thing. Remember Hearst and "yellow journalism". There has always been disinformation in every form of mass media.

Sometimes organic in the form of gossip and rumors. Sometimes deliberate in the form of disinformation campaigns and propaganda. Disinformation is always there.

We used to control it through physical gatekeepers. Very few organizations or people could own a radio station, TV station, newspaper, or publishing company. By regulation of those entities disinformation could be controlled and contained.

Computers and the internet gave everyone all of those things and access to everyone on the planets inbox. As a social experiment it is a stunning leap into the unknown.

The early results suggest it may not have been a good idea. I suspect we are going to wind up with some sort of license requirement to post content on the public internet.

A formality to get but a leash that can be yanked if your content becomes too offensive. To many complaints and you lose your personal content license and truly get "banned from the internet".
