Several thoughts. Have you read,

The Wizard and the Prophet: Two Remarkable Scientists and Their Dueling Visions to Shape Tomorrow's World.

It's about.

"From the best-selling, award-winning author of 1491 and 1493--an incisive portrait of the two little-known twentieth-century scientists, Norman Borlaug and William Vogt, whose diametrically opposed views shaped our ideas about the environment, laying the groundwork for how people in the twenty-first century will choose to live in tomorrow's world."

I recommend it to everyone who wants to think about and discuss this topic.

We live in the world Norman Borlaug created. You owe your life to him.

The debate over the role of technology is an old one. In round One, Borlaug and the "Wizards" saved the day and created the "Green Revolution". The warnings of the "Prophets" (Club of Rome, Limits of Growth) seemed to be unfounded and they have been discredited ever since then.

This is round Two. Now the "Wizards" are betting on FUSION.

It's easy to dismiss this as delusion and fantasy but that's the same argument that was made in the 70's. The Wizards won that round so they are arguing from a position strength now.

They can say, "doomers were wrong last time, doomers are wrong again".

I went to see the Wizards over Christmas and made my Climate pitch. They were unconvinced.

We discussed Rome and its Fate.

The Fate of Rome: Climate, Disease, and the End of an Empire. (Kyle Harper 2017)

Their position was simple.

Even if Climate Change caused the population of Europe and the Mediterranean Basin to decline 50% and the Central Government to collapse.

BUSINESS AND TRADE NEVER STOPPED.

The only path they see forward is "full speed ahead". They are betting civilization that another Borlaug or Einstein will appear and Fusion will be cracked.

If we try "degrowth" and "reallocation" billions will die. If we "push on". There's a good chance technology will save us and no one has to die.

How can you not want to take that chance?

How can you want to bet against human ingenuity?

Do you want your grandchildren to hide in fear when lightning flashes in the sky. Afraid of "sky gods"?

Don't you think it's better to try for a future where they own the solar system. A solar system of infinite resources.

A future where they can reach for the Stars.

That's the sales pitch. I think people are going to like it. Expect to hear a lot of "happy talk" about FUSION.

My entire life can be described in one sentence: Things didn’t go as planned, and I’m OK with that.
