Random Thoughts — 08

Something about gardening.

Something to teach your kids.

Basil from Whole Foods.

Plants drink, just like people. We don’t see it. Because it happens underground. But plants need a lot of water.

Most people don’t appreciate how much water plants can drink in a single day.

As an experiment, take a “Live Basil” plant from the market and put it in a glass of water. Make sure it has good light and check it every day.

Watch how fast the water level drops. In the photo there is a dark line 2/3 of the way up the glass. That’s where the water level was this morning.

The line about 1/3 of the way up is where it dropped to in 9 hours. Basil is a thirsty plant.

If you want to observe the consequences of letting a plant get thirsty, let the cup run dry. In a day the leaves will be wilted and dying. In two they will be dead.

Plants need water to live and they drink just like we do.

That’s a good lesson to teach your kids these days. It’s a good lesson for all of us.

That’s what I’m thinking about today. 🙃
