One of my High School heroes was Stephen Crane. You know him from "The Red Badge of Courage". He was also a sometimes great poet and a crusading reporter.

He lived in the slums writing "Maggie a Girl of the Streets". He went to Cuba to report on the war. And he was a poet. At a time when poets were rockstars.

He's a personal hero of mine.

Also, there is the military ROTC indoctrination about the "responsibility of command". In a professional military structure troops have to "respect the rank" not the person per se.

Part of what makes that work, is the covenant, that as an officer you would never ask anyone to do something you aren't willing to do yourself.

So, sometimes I get interested in something and I "investigate". If we are going to require people to do this job, we should be taking care of them. This should not become the digital equivalent of the lowest caste doing shitwork.

My entire life can be described in one sentence: Things didn’t go as planned, and I’m OK with that.
