I was thinking some more about how organizing for a cause and spreading a faith are intrinsically similar. You could learn a lot by studying the techniques of cult leaders.

There is a deep literature on the topic but here's something fun from left field. Have you read "Fight Club"?

Chuck Paluchek(sp?) is an amazing writer. Each of his books will make you think about how you see the world around you. I consider him "Vonnegut's heir".

Fight Club is a primer on building a cult/movement disguised as a novel. It's a fast read and it's VERY insightful.
