500my of Climate Change

What do we know, and what does it tell us about what’s going to happen?

How bad is it going to get?

What should I do?

These are the fundamental questions about Global Warming and Climate Change that we need to understand in the run up to COP26. What’s amazing is that we can actually answer these questions now with a high degree of accuracy. Climate research has increased our knowledge of the world’s climate system dramatically in the last twenty years.

It has come at a high price though.

Roughly 50% of all Human Generated CO2 (HGC) in the atmosphere has been put there in just the last 20 years. This massive carbon bomb has dramatically accelerated Global Warming and allowed us to observe its effects “in real time” as it were.

Being able to see effects that models had indicated might happen in 50 years, happen in just 10 has helped refine our understanding of how the climate system works. So much so, that we can now make informed decisions about policy going forward, with a real understanding of what those policies will cost.

The price of that knowledge is that we are going to suffer 2C of warming at a minimum. That is for certain.

In the spirit of the IPCC Report I am going to start with a short Executive Summary. I’m…
