I would have gone with "Their lives are wasted, in hidden places". Just because "they" have no control over what's happening to them.
Sorry, everyone's a critic. :-) This is very good.
At the moment my mind is running more to this.
What I think about while arranging cookies on a plate.
I am full of sadness and rage right now. A terrible combination in a combat vet with rage management and impulse control issues. I am working hard to find my balance.
