I think determination to survive in the most humane, constructive, positive way possible is a good goal at this point. This isn't going to be easy for anyone.
I have been reflecting on this while watching The Last of Us, Station Eleven, and the Earth 2100 documentary from 2010. It's hard to appreciate and wrap my head around the cultural transition that's about to happen.
People over 50 have lived most of their lives during the 20th Century Climate Optimum. A "golden age of prosperity" built on cheap energy. We will spend the last years of our lives watching it melt away.
People under 20 and those born now, are going to live their lives in the "new climate reality".
Their lives are going to be so different than ours that I cannot comprehend how burdened with sadness and anger those generations are going to be. They will only know a collapsing world, a climate in wild disequilibrium, shrinking populations, diminishing prospects, and increasing breakdown.
30's to 50's are going to get whipsawed the worst. They have "bought in" and are vested in a world that's on the verge of Collapse.
I have been reading about how stretched people in that age group are from buying houses. Normally, houses are a form of investment for the middle class. A way to build wealth over time.
Climate Change is going to wipe away about 30% of the existing housing stock in the US and Canada over the next 20 years. Fires, floods, water shortages, and extreme storms are going to wipe out this generation and make many of them Climate Refugees.
There is going to be a LOT of pressure for our society and culture to become hardened and callous. Indifferent to the suffering of others and resentful of requests for help.
Building communities resistant to those tendencies and pressures is, IMHO a NOBLE project to attempt. One worthy of you and of all of us.
