Exactly. A set of simple rules drives evolutionary pressures and complexities emerge. Life reverses entropy and order emerges out of chaos.
You start with the simple idea that you "follow" writers you like. Then we tweak it, so that people who follow you get exposed to the writers you follow.
Now, "following" someone isn't just about liking their work. It's also an act of curating. When you follow someone you are reccomending them to your followers.
So, each writer becomes like a cell in a collective mind. Like minded writers follow each other and their followers "follow" them. A collective "viewpoint" emerges and a meta-mind takes shape.
We see it on Medium at the highest level. Almost immediately Medium splits into two minds. For simplicity I am referring to them as Democrats and Trumpublicans although the division is more complex.
Then, in each of these collective minds there is the internal monolog that we are part of. Each of us a voice in the endless babble of the collective mind. As it orders itself and comes to decisions.
Yes, I find the social dynamics of Medium fascinating. 🤔
