I had relatives like this when I was a child in Houston. If they didn't have bad luck they wouldn't have had any luck at all. Nothing ever went quite right no matter how hard they worked.
My mother's older brother "Billy Ray" died in an accident cutting trees exactly like you describe. Except the chainsaw got him in the midsection. I can remember her hysterically crying about it when I was 11.
