Actually, we aren't "quite there yet" in terms of the permafrost releasing CO2 just yet. It's RAPIDLY thawing but whats happening is the formation of ponds and lakes.

Which are emitting a fairly large amount of CH4 as organic matter starts decaying.

Most of the CO2 is coming from the forest death and burning of the Global Boreal Forests. In Canada last year (2023) it was equal to 4X the aviation industry.

That's not counting what's going on in Russia.

Look at that GIF for the first 6 months if 2024. Can you see how much CO2 is pouring into the atmosphere as the Siberian forests BURN.
